FISH FACTS

  • Fish are able to recognize individuals and keep track of complex social relationships.
  • Some fish have been observed using tools to solve problems.
  • Most fish have taste buds all over their body.
  • Tuna can grow to well over six feet in length.
  • Fish have exceptional eyesight and can detect motion and see focused images.
  • Fish show impressive learning capabilities in much the same way land animals do.
  • Most fish see in color and use colors to camouflage themselves or defend themselves and their territory.
  • Fish have a nervous system and pain receptors, and studies show fish feel pain the same way land animals (like us) do.
  • When returning to spawn, salmon rely on their sense of smell, ocean currents and the moon to find the waters where they were born.
  • There are more than 32,000 different kinds of fish in the world today, more than all other kinds of vertebrates combined.
  • Tuna are incredibly fast swimmers and can even retract their fins to reduce drag.
  • Fish have a keen sense of smell which they rely on for survival in dark waters.
  • Fish will develop an understanding of who belongs to their social group versus which fish are untrustworthy.
  • Male cods will display their fins as a part of courtship and newly formed couples swim together during spawning.
  • Fish have highly-developed hearing capabilities that allow them to detect electric currents in the water.
  • The biggest fish in the world is the giant whale shark, who can grow to nearly sixty feet (the length of two school buses).
  • Fish have been observed cooperating in order to problem solve or catch prey - sharing the food afterwards.
  • A fish doesn't want to die any more than you or I would, and will try to avoid being killed.
"Although scientists cannot provide a definitive answer on the level of consciousness for
any non-human vertebrate, the extensive evidence of fish behavioral and cognitive
sophistication and pain perception suggests that best practice would be to lend fish the
same level of protection as any other vertebrate. We should therefore include fish in our
‘moral circle’ and afford them the protection they deserve."

You can find out what happens to fish when we choose to eat them by clicking on the
red button below. Much of what you'll find is standard practice and considered perfectly
humane, and though it might not be as hard to watch as abuse towards other animals
please try to remember that it's only because they look so far removed from us
        - and not because they suffer any less.

"I went snorkeling and noticed how gently the fish welcomed us into their world,
compared to the violence with which we welcome them into ours."
