PIG FACTS

  • Pigs are curious and highly intelligent. They are smarter than dogs, three-year-old humans, and even some primates.
  • Pigs have a great sense of direction and have been known to find their way home over great distances.
  • Pigs are very social. They will form close bonds with each other and also with other species.
  • Pigs recognize their names and will respond when called - even after just a few days old.
  • Just like dogs, pigs will wag their tails when they are happy or content.
  • Pigs are gentle, peaceful, and rarely show aggression.
  • Pigs enjoy close contact and will lie close together when resting, often sleeping snout to snout.
  • Pig communities are matriarchal and herds big or small have a highly structured chain of command.
  • Pigs are excellent problem solvers. In one test they learned to play video games (controlling the joystick with their snouts) faster than chimpanzees.
  • Pigs are family-oriented and maintain lifelong bonds with their children.
Mother pigs will stay with their children
   throughout their lives.
  • Pigs are one of the few beings able to recognize themselves in a mirror. Other animals with this skill include chimps, dolphins, magpies and humans.
  • Pigs can't sweat so they roll in mud or water to stay cool. They will also cover themselves in muddy 'sunscreen' to protect their sensitive skin.
  • Pigs love a good belly rub and will roll over in anticipation when approached.
  • Just like us, pigs can be picky eaters and will have particular food preferences.
  • Pigs make a wide variety of sounds that they use to communicate with each other.
  • Pigs don't want to be killed any more than you or I would.

You can find out what happens to pigs when we choose to eat them by clicking on the
red button below. Much of what you'll find is standard practice to the industry or took
place at humane assured facilities. It's not always easy viewing, but if you still think
it's fine to kill these animals then I highly recommend you take a look.
If instead you find these things are simply too awful to look at then please ask yourself
why, if you can't even bear to look at them, is it okay to pay for them to happen?
