Whilst some take offence at conflating these two issues, it is hard to deny that slavery is still alive, well and legal in today's modern world - it's just that the species of the victims has changed.
Animals are denied even basic behavioural rights, they are removed from their families, owned as property, forcibly used as labour, transported (and now even shipped across the oceans) in awful, crowded conditions where many of them die. They are bought and sold, beaten and branded, and confined and chained - reduced by society to lower, unintelligent 'things' rather than thinking feeling beings of moral value.
